For some reason, and I try to understand why, San Gimignano draws people back to it--maybe it's the fun name, maybe it's the physical proof of the old Guelf
and Ghibelline feuds that so defined and created history in this part of Italy, maybe it's the wonderful piazza with the over photographed cistern--whatever it
is, we returned once again. This time deciding to finally spend a night there to experience its charms and delights after the day trippers have left. This is
unarguably the best way to sense a place and what it once was--to somehow enter that niche in space where the past remains alive. I think, though, that now
having done that, it will be a while before we return again to this picturesque village.

PIENZA
Hotel Leon Bianco--on the Cistern Piazza.
We always make a quick stop in Pienza because it is
just fun to be there--but, more importantly, this is
where we pick up olive oil to use while there and to
bring home.  This are my only shots from this
trip--except the one of our car showing the damage
done by a hit and run parker
MONTALCINO
And--what is Montalcino known for
today? Brunello, of course.  Any true
wine aficionado (oenophile) makes
this is a must stop on the Tuscany
wine circuit. The Roca here is one of
the most famous enotecas around as
it in itself is a major attraction.
More than wine tasting (for those
with a 6 year old), the fun is in
climbing the walls and turrets to
view the town and countryside.

Typical Roadsigns of Tuscany
My reason for always coming here is not
the wine--as we prefer the Vino Nobile of
Montepulciano--but to buy one more
olive wood cutting board and new olive
wood cooking utensils. I now have several
boards in different sizes and shapes and
love using them as they transport me to
Italy every time.

A few last shots to treat the memories of those
who have been here and have Tuscany in the
heart. I hope the visual journey has been
pleasurable.  For those of you who have yet to
go, I hope your anticipation has been
heightened your visions technicolored.
